Taking on a locum, agency, or bank staff placement away from home means sorting out somewhere to live, often at short notice and for a length of time that isn’t always certain from the outset. Here’s a practical look at what to think about when arranging accommodation for a placement at Scarborough Hospital.

Does the trust or agency arrange accommodation, or do I need to sort it myself?

This varies. Some placements come with accommodation support built in, others leave it to the individual to arrange, and it’s not always clear which applies until you ask directly. If you’re working through an agency, it’s worth confirming early whether accommodation search or costs form part of the placement, rather than assuming either way.

We understand Scarborough Hospital does have some on-site accommodation available for staff on placement, though it appears to be limited and tends to get booked up quickly, particularly during busier periods. We can’t speak to the standard of it ourselves, so it’s worth asking your trust or agency directly what’s available and how far ahead you’d need to request it, and having a local fallback in mind in case it isn’t.

Whichever applies, having a fallback option researched in advance, particularly for a placement that might extend, means one less thing to sort out once the placement is already underway.

How close to the hospital should I try to stay?

Close enough that a shift change or an early start isn’t a source of stress, but it doesn’t have to mean literally next door. Sanderling Chase is just over a mile from Scarborough Hospital, a 25 minute walk, or a short bus ride from nearby Falsgrave Road, close enough for a straightforward commute without the premium that comes with being directly opposite the hospital gates.

There’s also secure bike storage at the apartment, so cycling in is an option too, particularly useful if you haven’t brought a car for the placement.

Self-catering or hotel: which actually suits a longer placement better?

For a single night or two, a hotel is the simpler option. For a placement running several weeks or months, self-catering tends to suit better, for a few practical reasons:

  • Proper rest between shifts — a hotel room is fine for sleeping, but after a long or difficult shift, having a separate living space to properly switch off in makes a genuine difference
  • Cooking your own food — particularly valuable around irregular shift patterns, when hospital canteen hours or nearby food options don’t always line up with when you’re actually free to eat. There are local takeaways within walking distance for the nights that’s genuinely all you’ve got energy for, but a fresh fruit and veg shop and a large supermarket are also both a short walk away, so keeping proper food in is just as easy
  • A proper kitchen, not a kettle and a microwave — a full-height, 50/50 split fridge freezer means there’s room to actually stock up rather than living out of a mini-fridge, so putting together a healthy meal or snack between shifts is straightforward rather than a chore
  • Laundry — an in-apartment washing machine, two drying racks, and a steam iron mean uniform care doesn’t need to be planned around a launderette or a rota
  • Space for visitors or family — if family are staying with you, or visiting during a longer placement, a hotel room rarely works well for more than a night or two

What if my placement gets extended?

This is common enough that it’s worth planning for from the outset, particularly with locum work. If your dates might change, get in touch as soon as you know; we’ll do what we can to extend or adjust the stay, working with our management partner Host & Stay to check availability. It’s not a guaranteed policy, since availability depends on what’s already booked, but early notice gives the best chance of extending smoothly rather than needing to find somewhere new partway through a placement.

What Sanderling Chase offers locum, agency and bank staff

Sanderling Chase is a two-bedroom, professionally managed apartment on Commercial Street, just off Falsgrave Road, just over a mile from Scarborough Hospital. It sleeps up to 4 guests, with a king-size bed in one bedroom and a zip-and-link super-king in the other, which splits to two singles, useful for colleagues sharing a placement. It has its own standalone entrance, a proper kitchen with a full-height 50/50 fridge freezer and washing machine, fast fibre WiFi, and simple self-check-in, so arrival doesn’t depend on fitting around anyone else’s hours.

Long-stay direct booking discounts are available for stays of 28 nights or more.
